There are add-on features and bonus extras to consider when playing Powerball. Learn more about Double Play, Power Play, and Powerball drawings.

Playing Powerball is a pretty straightforward game. You select your numbers, either on your own or using the automatic number selection from the computer at the counter. And then you wait to see if your numbers match to win.

But there’s more to playing Powerball. Opting for the Double Play or the Power Play add-on means having a little more fun with each Powerball drawing. Today, we’ll share what you need to know about drawings, Double Play, and Power Play so you can get in on the added layers of winning potential.

What Is Double Play in Powerball?

When you buy your Powerball ticket, you can also consider playing Double Play. This additional game is only available in some participating state games. But it gives Powerball players another chance to win prizes in addition to the primary drawing Powerball prize. Double Play puts together a second jackpot of up to $10 million for every Monday, Wednesday, and Saturday drawing.

Double Play works the same way as the primary drawing. Use the same numbers from your primary drawing to enter the secondary, separate drawing to see if you’ve won. It’s only one dollar to play. And Double Play is available in the following jurisdictions:

  • Colorado
  • Florida
  • Indiana
  • Maryland
  • Montana
  • Idaho
  • Nebraska
  • Michigan
  • New Mexico
  • New Jersey
  • Pennsylvania
  • South Dakota
  • Washington
  • Tennessee
  • South Carolina
  • Missouri
  • Pennsylvania
  • Puerto Rico

What Is Power Play in Powerball?

When you buy your Powerball ticket, consider playing Power Play. This additional feature only costs a dollar, and it boosts your payout should your numbers match to win a non-jackpot prize amount. The Power Play is a multiplier that can increase your non-jackpot prize by winning two, three, four, five, or ten times. The multiplier is randomly selected before each official Powerball drawing. And the 10X multiplier only applies when the current advertised Powerball jackpot is $150 million or less. For those Powerball players who match some but not all of the numbers in a drawing can multiply their winnings - which is huge when you win $50,000 or $1 million. Power Play is available in all 45 participating Powerball-playing states, too.

When Are Powerball Drawings Held?

Powerball continues to be a fun and exciting game, in part because it’s so convenient and affordable to play. But also, it’s a chance to win big three times every week. Drawings physically take place in Florida every Monday, Wednesday, and Saturday. The selected numbers are randomly drawn at 10:59 PM EST. And these drawing numbers are broadcast throughout the US on the news for players to see.

You can also check your Powerball numbers online after each drawing. Additionally, after the drawing takes place, you can physically take your ticket to a participating and authorized Powerball retailer to have your ticket scanned. The attendant can verify whether or not your ticket is a winner in any combination.

Collecting Powerball, Double Play, or Power Play Prizes

If you find you have a winning Powerball ticket, you’ll want to next go about collecting your cash prize. For amounts under $600, you can simply visit any authorized retailer within the state of your ticket drawing to collect your prize over the counter. For those more substantial prizes, including those secured from Double Play or Power Play, will be a little more involved.

Larger Powerball prizes require a visit to your nearest Lottery office. There, your ticket will be confirmed, and you’ll be asked to complete identification paperwork. You can also choose to reach out by mail, although visiting in person eliminates the risk of your winning ticket being lost in the mail.

Now that you understand some of your additional winning opportunities when playing Powerball, in Double Play and Power Play add-ons, all you have to do is get out there and play!
