The majority of jobs are going to be for clerks, receptionists, and various administrators. These jobs are the backbone of the lottery Operator. Without these jobs the lottery would not exist. Someone has to answer the phones to distribute calls to other departments, write memos and letters, greet visitors, do paperwork, and generally keep the lottery operation going smoothly and efficiently from the front end.
People who work in the design department come up with the graphics and other visuals for lottery colours, shapes, words, fonts, and such to put a “brand” on the operator. Together with those from marketing, these designs are promoted to the public to make them aware that the lottery exists, the amounts of prizes that can be won, and other activities to draw in players to increase participation and revenue. In other words both departments are responsible to making the lottery look attractive and inviting.
Sales jobs in the lottery industry are very important. Lottery sales people seek out the income that does not come directly from the lottery itself but from the peripheral activities that the lottery industry can provide to stakeholders.
As as money comes in, those in the purchasing department are responsible for the money that goes out to acquire products and services to enable the lottery to run. Purchasing acquires everything from ticket paper and terminal, to electronic ticket checkers and lottery draw equipment.
In one of the more important jobs in the gaming industry, the accounting department is responsible for keep track and investigating all the money that comes in to and goes out from the lottery operator. Accounting keeps track of purchases, payouts, sales, expenses, and every other penny that flows towards and away from the operator. They will also do audits to verify monetary values or to investigate discrepancies in lottery financial documents. They will also perform tasks requested by the gaming commission in all types of financial requests.
Those who work in the regulatory departments are responsible for not only ensuring that all employees strictly follow the rules as set out by the operator, but that both employees and the operator itself are following the rules and regulations held over them buy the government regulator. Any exceptions are required to be reported to the regulator for investigation.
Customer Service Prize Claims & Payments employees work with the public to answer general questions, handle any issues that are brought up by players, and go through the processes to validate winning tickets and hand out the prizes. These are the front-line lottery employees the public would interact with the most.
Customer Loyalty & Retention employees strive to deal with issues that can’t be solved by the customer service department to try to satisfy upset players and keep them playing the lottery. Security officers, while employed by the operator for general security in casinos and other operator locations, guard the lottery equipment all around the clock. The may be stationed at the facility where the lottery equipment is stored and locked away. They will let in other lottery employees who work on the maintenance of the lottery equipment or to do a pre-draw checklist. They accompany the lottery equipment as it is moved to the draw area, stay during the draw, and escort the lottery equipment back to lock-up for the post-draw checklist all the while keep their eyes out for anything out of the ordinary or suspicious.
And of course, you can be a lottery retailer yourself. If you’ve got the money, desire, and inclination, are able to provide your fingerprints and pass a background check to become licenced, then you can be part of the lottery, the person who sells, checks, and redeems lottery tickets.
Working for the lottery can put you in the middle of a popular and beneficial industry for both players and other stakeholders, can be very exciting and fulfilling. But in most cases, you may be banned from buying tickets while working there.
